Putting my ER Physician Assistant hat on for you all today! Last week a BAD stomach bug was going around. THANKFULLY our family was only hit for 24-48 hours, only my youngest threw up and the vomiting only lasted 6 hours. Whew.
Do these things when your family gets hit by stomach bugs! They are never pretty, but essential oils can be a great help!
DON'T EAT OR DRINK.
Not even a sip of water. In the ER we call it NPO (nothing per os). Everything you put into that tummy is coming right back up. People get concerned about dehydration but it's actually the continued vomiting that contributes to the early stages of dehydration, NOT the lack of fluid intake. My kids know when they throw up, there's nothing to eat or drink for the next 6 hr. My oldest even sets a timer (she's my rule follower lol). I let them rinse their mouth with water and spit it back out but they don't swallow it. This stops the vomiting SO MUCH sooner. And your kids will get into the routine, as mine have.
Once the vomiting has stopped for 6 hrS, give them 1-2 tsp water in a shot glass. Don't give them their water bottle; they can't help but chug it down. If they hold that down for 20 min repeat with 1-2 TBS. In 20 more min repeat with 1-2 oz water. If they're still not vomiting, try a SMALL amount of applesauce or 1/4 a banana and WAIT another hour. Stay on a mild diet for 24 hours, then resume normal diet.
If your 6 hr no throw up window ends close to bedtime, wait till the AM to try fluids. No one needs to deal with vomiting in bed all night. Let everyone get some rest.
PREPARE THROW-UP BOWL
Line your throw up bowl with plastic trash bags and throw away. It's no fun to wash throw up bowls all day. We add a few drops of peppermint essential oil to the bottom of the bowl. Peppermint can help with the nausea and smells a lot better than puke.

SANITIZE ALL DAY
Give everyone a bottle of hand sanitizer and teach them to use it all day long. We love doTERRA On Guard Hand Sanitizing Mist as it is safe to use and all-natural. It is infused with oils like Wild Orange, Cinnamon, Clove Bud, Rosemary and Eucalyptus, and has great anti-microbial and anti-bacterial properties.
doTERRA Tamer blend is specially formulated for little tummies. It is infused with oils such as Japanese Peppermint, Spearmint, and Ginger that works well in soothing kids' tummy issues. Apply every 2-3 hours and after any vomiting.
I hope that your home is spared from the stomach crud this year but if not remember these tips and I hope it's over in a few hours! Until then enjoy a few hours of movies and snuggles.
